Leads Sustainability by Developing Railway Sleepers Combining Steelmaking Slag and Waste Plastics
EOMTech, a POSCO in-house venture company, is drawing attention for developing an innovative railway sleeper.
EOMTech has created a new type of railway sleeper—a structural component that supports rails for train operation—by combining steelmaking byproduct slag and waste plastics.
This achievement was realized through POSCO’s Performance-Sharing System, one of its shared-growth programs, and is being recognized as a successful case that delivers two key outcomes simultaneously: environmental problem-solving and cost reduction.
Founded in 2019 as part of POSCO’s first in-house venture cohort, EOMTech, led by CEO Young-jun Park, developed a composite material called “Slastic,” which uses steelmaking slag and waste plastics as its core materials.
Through this development, EOMTech significantly reduced costs by replacing part of the expensive glass fiber materials traditionally used in railway sleepers with Slastic.
In addition, sleepers made from Slastic are 100% recyclable, further enhancing their environmental value and reinforcing EOMTech’s contribution to sustainable infrastructure development…
