POSCO Accelerates Resource Utilization of Steel Slag, Contributing to a Circular Economy Society

POSCO announced on the 28th that it is contributing to the realization of a circular economy society by recycling byproducts generated during the steelmaking process.

Various byproducts such as slag, dust, and sludge are produced in the course of manufacturing steel products. Among them, slag, which remains after iron is separated from iron ore during the production of molten iron, is the most representative byproduct, accounting for more than 75% of all byproducts generated at steel plants.

In particular, approximately 25 million tons of slag are generated annually in Korea, an amount sufficient to fill about 5,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Given this scale, it is crucial to maximize recycling through diverse utilization methods.

To transform steel slag into high value-added and useful resources, POSCO is pursuing a range of initiatives.

Commercialization of Asphalt Road Paving Using Steelmaking Slag

Steelmaking slag is a byproduct generated during the steelmaking process, in which impurities are removed from molten iron and chemical compositions are finely adjusted to meet the specifications of different steel products. Compared to natural aggregates such as gravel and sand, steelmaking slag offers superior strength, making it a valuable alternative resource. However, until now, it has mainly been used only as basic fill material, such as for embankments in road construction projects…
