This publication aims to introduce the ESG management strategies and practices of Korean companies and examine how far they have expanded and taken root.
This installment, the twelfth case in the series, focuses on the POSCO Group, which is evolving into a Korean-style “Silicon Valley.”
In July 2018, POSCO declared its management philosophy of “Corporate Citizenship that grows together with society,” marking its sixth anniversary this year. With the vision slogan “Green Tomorrow, With POSCO” toward becoming a 100-year company, POSCO has been strengthening ethical management and dedicating itself to sustainable management.
In January 2020, POSCO became the first steelmaker in Korea to declare carbon neutrality, setting a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and moving swiftly to develop hydrogen-based steelmaking technologies.
At the 50th anniversary ceremony of the first integrated completion of Pohang Steelworks held on the 3rd of this month, POSCO announced plans to invest a total of KRW 121 trillion by 2030, focusing on eco-friendly businesses such as secondary batteries and hydrogen.
To improve the environment, POSCO has continued efforts such as creating marine forests, recycling byproducts including discarded shellfish, and developing advanced technologies—such as smart safety balls and welding robots—to create safer workplaces.
